In Our Volunteer Showcase Series...
We ask members to answer seven questions to show others what it's like volunteering for the elderly in the community. Today we showcase Thomas Major--one of Across Generations's original volunteers who is dedicating his future career to care for people of all generations.

About Thomas
1. What’s your name, major, and year?
My name is Thomas Major. I'm a first year student at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
2. What programs have you volunteered for with Across Generations?
I volunteered with the Discussion program and Music program at Across Generations, and volunteered from spring 2023 through the spring of 2024.
3. What’s your favorite part about volunteering with the elderly?
My favorite part about volunteering with the elderly is being able to learn their life stories. Over my time with Across Generations I met so many seniors who had such fascinating stories. It truly gives you an insight about what the previous generations' life was like in such a way that you can't hear from anyone else.
4. Describe one interaction you’ve had with a senior. What did you have in common? What were you surprised about?
During a conversation I had with one senior, I found out that we both had lived in similar cities here in Virginia. I became very surprised to hear how much the area had changed and how so many new buildings had been created since they had grown up there. It definitely gave me an insight to the past that I still find very interesting.
5. Why did you want to volunteer with Across Generations?
I wanted to volunteer with Across Generations to serve to the elderly, in part to improve my conversing skills for when I interact with future patients (as I was a Pre-Med major at the time).
6. What have you learned by interacting with the elderly? Has your faith been impacted in any way? Please explain.
I've learned a lot about humility and being interested in people's lives from interacting with the seniors. My faith has definitely grown by seeing how much God has interacted with the lives of so many people.
